Interacting and Changing our Narratives

Icon no triangle and transparent backround.png

A three-year project funded by the Department of Education's Institute of Education Sciences (IES).

Aim: improve educational outcomes for Black American high-school students by addressing social anxiety.

Step 1: Focus Groups and Interviews

The goal was to gather information via focus groups and individual interviews with key community stakeholders (students and parents) to better understand the cultural, school, and community contexts. This work helped identify necessary cultural and structural changes that needed to be made to the Skills for Academic and Social Success (SASS; Masia Warner et al., 2005; Masia Warner et al., 2007) intervention.

Step 2: Open Pilot of Enhanced Intervention

The goal was to conduct an open trial of the newly developed ICON group program. We piloted recruitment strategies in identifying students with social anxiety, trained and supported school personnel in delivering the ICON program in the school, and assessed the usability, feasibility, and acceptability of the ICON group.

Step 3: Controlled Pilot of Enhanced Intervention

The goal is to conduct a randomized control trial to compare the fully revised ICON program to standard school practice.
